Page 75 of "A Tree of Four Ancient Stocks" Chapter V
The following is a sketch history of Nancy Mercer. The subject of this sketch was brought up in a Christian home and received many of the high ideals of her life from her noble Christian ancestry. Her mother was Sarah McCuskey of the old stone church of Elm Grove, W. Va. During her early life she was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Martinsburg, Ohio, where Dr Henry Hervey was pastor for many years, and under whose ministry she was trained for Christian Service. She entered the Martinsburg Academy, and later attended the Dunlap's Creek Academy, and graduated from the Olome-Institute at Canonsburg, Pa. After her graduation she became a teacher and held splendid positions in the U. P. Seminary at Beaver, Pa. in the Edgeworth Seminary at Sewickley, Pa., and in her Alma Mater at Canonsburg, Pa. She was married first to Mr. Oliver Van Eman, a commission merchant of Cincinnati, Ohio. This union was terminated by death within six months after he marriage. After seven years of widowhood, during which time she was engaged in teaching, as before mentioned, her second marriage was to Rev. Milton McMillin. In her Christian work Mrs. McMillin had an especial interest in Temperance and mission. work. She was an officer in local and Presbyterial societies of this nature. She delighted in the conferences for Bible study and attended the Winona Conference at five different sessions.
Mrs. Nancy McMillin was born in Knox Co., O., September 24th, 1811 and died at the home of her son, Rev. E. M. McMillin, D. D., at East Liverpool , Ohio., December 8th, 1908. But to her and her Husband, Rev. M. McMillin, were born five sons, and as the father died in 1876, it is evident that the character of their boys was very largely formed under the teachings and influence of the home training of the mother."
Notes for REV. MILTON MCMILLIN, DR.:
Rev. McMillin was a graduate of Jefferson College of the class of 1858, and of Allegheny Seminary, class of 1861. Rev. Milton McMillin was pastor of two important churches, the church of Delaware, Ohio and the church of Mount Gilead, Ohio He died in 1876

23. JOHN NEWTON5 MCCUSKEY (JOHN4, JAMES3, MCCUSKEY2, MCCUSKEY1) was born November 25, 1838 in Ohio County, West Virginia, and died February 25, 1905 in Roberts Township, Marshall Cty, Illinois. He married LUCINDA STEWART February 25, 1867 in Marshall County, Illinois. She was born 1847, and died 1925.
Notes for JOHN NEWTON MCCUSKEY:
JOHN MCCUSKEY, SR. OBITUARY OF WELL KNOWN CITIZEN OF ROBERTS TOWNSHIP
John McCuskey, Sr. was born on a farm near Wheeling, W. Va., Nov. 25, 1938. Died at his home near Varna, Ill., February 25, 1905, aged 66 years and 3 months.
The deceased was the fifth child of a family of eleven children; the four older than himself still survive him, of the six younger, one brother and two sisters have preceded him to the spirit world.
On Feb. 25, 1869, he was united in marriage to Lucinda Stewart, his death occurring on the 36 th anniversary of his marriage. It is worthy of notice that his birth, his marriage and his death occurred on the same day of the month, the 25th.
Eleven children were born from this union, ten of whom, with his wife survive him. One son died in infancy
Born in the shadow of mountains, the physical features of his surroundings were strongly imprinted upon his character; rugged honesty and Sterling integrity were as true to him as the needle of the pole. His early education was gained in the old lo school house of more than half a century ago, but the greater part of a practical education was acquired in that dearest of all schools-the school of experience.
John Mccuskey was a man of simple tastes and habits, plain in speech and manner, avoiding all show or display. During the last weeks of his life he was a great sufferer, bearing his affliction patiently, concealing his pain as far as he was able from his family until death came as a relief.
At the age of nineteen he came west to Illinois to visit a brother near Metamora(William.) The level prairies were a revalation and the black fertile soil a sharp contrast to his native state. While he often spoke about the flinty soil and the never ending hills, he had a deep abiding love for his old home and visited it as often as circumstances permitted.
In December, 1860, he made a second trip to Illinois Bois, returning to W. Va. in the spring. (some not readable.) Finally the ? fever could not be resisted and in August, 1863, he came to Illinois to stay. While visiting his uncle, John White, at Dana, he met Calvin Shields, of Ox Bow, Putnam county, who persuaded him to come home with him. He later accepted the invitation and on January 11, 1864, walked from Wenona to Mr. Shield's pace4 on Ox Bow Prairie, carrying a heavy valise and enquiring his way from house to house.
He worked a few years longer and then began farming for himself. he lived successively on the Norton, Brumsey and Broaddus farms until 1880, when he bought the farm upon which he has since lived.
Last summer in company with his son, John, Jr. and wife and the youngest daughter, Winner, he invited the old Virginia homestead. As he walked over the old place he remarked, "I have been over the old farm many times but this is the last."
For more than forty years he resided in Marshall county. he saw the wild, wind-swept prairies give way to fields of grain, countless farm houses take the place of the occasional settler's cabin, the painted, well kept school house replace the humble log structure of boyhood days.
The number of times he was called to fill positions of trust by the people of his Town is the best evidence of the esteem which he was held.
The family circle is broken, the vacant chair can never be filled, never again shall we grasp those vanished hands, but there is comfort in the words of Jesus to the parents of the damsel: "Not dead but sleeping."
Some day we'll understand. Some time, some place we shall meet again.

WHEELING NEWS REGISTER - Sunday, October, 10, 1920
Isaac S. DeGarmo, age about 62 years, of Leatherwood, one of the most prominent contractors in this community died in the Ohio Vallen General Hospital at 12-20 o'clock this morning as a result of shooting himself in the right temple, with a revolver, according to a statement made by Mrs. Bertha C Bable, aged about 40 years, of 3822 Wood Street, wife of Frank C. Bable, who was shot in the right jaw by De Garmo on a lonely roadside near the bridge at Rudler's station; out the pike, about 8'oclock last night. The woman is in the same hospital and will recover, it was reported from the institution early this morning. As far as known, there were no witnesses to the shooting except Mrs. Bable.
She made a statement to the police in the hospital that she and DeGarmo had been associated for sometime until several weeks ago when she was married to Bable, when she ceased to have anything to do with eGarmo. She further said that while he and a young daughter of her husband's were on their way to a show Last night that he met her in market street, near Fourteenth and asked her to take an automobile ride with him as he wished to tell her something. She took the Bable to the show house and then entered an automobile - which she thinks was a taxi - with DeGarmo. They got ou of the car on the lonely road at Rudler's and DeGarmo dismissed the driver.
When they were alone, according to the woman he Said: "I want to talk to you. You have gotten married?". She said she told him she had and he then bagan cursing her and whipped out a revolver with his right hand and grasped her by the shoulder with his left hand, she screamed and attempted to run but he held her and fired, the bullet striking her right jaw bone. She then ffreed herself and ran a few feet when she heard the report of the pistol and just then Motorcycle Officer Mac Ewan and Patrolman Glass appeared. The ambulance and patrol wagon were called and DeGarmo was put into the ambulance and the woman into the patrol both being taken to the hospital. The woman was much excited and talked considerably to Detective Walker and the officers in the wagon.
Never Conscious After Shot
DeGarmo never regained consciousness. He died shortly after being removed from the hospital operation room, where the bullet was probed for by Dr. W. S> Fulton and other physcic8ian. There were a number of DeGarmo's relatives at the hospital when he died, including his wife; son and daughters.
DeGarmo was one of the most widely known men in this community. He has lived in this community practically all his life, and was one of the most successful road and general contractors in the Wheeling district. he had done extensive work for the county and city. he was a large man physically and is said to be worth considerable money. He leaves besides his widow, a son and several daughter, other relatives in this section.
Mrs. Bable was twice married. Her first husband was William Hibbert. They lived for many years on Mccolloch Street. Mr. Hibbert died several years ago. About three weeks ago she was married to Bable, who is a coal miner and was at home when he learned of the shooting. When told that his wife had been shot, he did not appear to be greatly perturbed.
A report was current about the city following the shooting that the authorities were working along a line that the woman had shot DeGarmo and then herself. The police said that a thorough investigation had been made of the shooting under Chief Frazier and there was absolutely no truth in the report. The police are attempting to find the man who drove the couple to the scene of the shooting.
The weapon said to have been used by DeGarmo is a .32-calibre cheap-made gun, what is commonly known as a "bull-dog" pistol and bears the trademark of "Victory."
The Degarmo body was removed early this morning to the Bertschy undertaking establishment, where an autopsy may be held today and later a coroner's jury empaneled if the coroner wishes.
